Brookers give back to Just Kids

On October 26th, The Community Service Council/Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy visited Just Kids Early Childhood Learning Center in Middle Island on October 26th. Students brought art supplies and bags of books for the children at Just Kids through Chick-fil-A’s One Million Books Giveaway.

Just Kids staff led an educational tour of the center to Brookers, and then spent time decorating pumpkins alongside Just Kids students. The visit also connected to the SBS community: Just Kids was founded by Steve Held, Ryan Gitto’s '29 grandfather.

For Quinn Davey '27, who first visited Just Kids during junior year, returning was especially meaningful.

“Not only were there so many resources for each one of these kids, but all of the faculty and staff were so genuinely happy to be there. It was one of those inspiring experiences where you come home raving about it.”

Returning gave Quinn more reason to consider a future working with children with disabilities, whether through physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, or another field.

“The second time (visiting Just Kids) was even more affirming that this could be something to make my life into.”

While the council came prepared to share books, supplies, and an afternoon of activities, Quinn’s reflection speaks to how much students took away from their time at Just Kids.

“The feeling while pulling out of the parking lot both years is unmatchable. I would recommend anyone to go on this trip whether or not education is something they might go into.”
