The Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab* hosts Stony Brook’s STEM courses, robotics teams, and coding classes. It’s also a place where students can work on projects that are exciting and important to them. With state of the art 3-D modeling software and printers, coding software and a host of other technological and engineering tools, students are free to pursue their passions and exercise their creativity.

From building drones, submersibles and robots, to coding new apps, our students demonstrate their entrepreneurial and creative powers in our lab. The Innovation Lab is the first in a multiphase plan to significantly increase our abilities to provide state-of-the-art tools for the creators of the future.

An important part of our STEM curriculum is to ensure we help students build the ethical framework that will guide responsible technology development. We believe it’s important to give students the philosophical infrastructure to think ethically about their choices. Twenty-first Century students live in a world of possibility and we want them to transcend mere profiteering and consumption on their pathway to be responsible creators and users.

*The Stony Brook School opened its Innovation Lab in March 2015 through a generous donation by the Weldon family.

“I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.”
